BMW 3 Series vs 5 Series

The 3 Series and the 5 Series are two of the most popular BMWs. Here at Queens Auto Mall, we always have a wide variety of both models available on our lot. In a lot of ways, they’re very similar. Drivers who crave the responsive handling and performance that the BMWs are famous for will find plenty to love either way. Both the 3 Series and the 5 Series also share lots of the same technology and features in common. So the choice between the BMW 3 Series vs 5 Series can be a hard one. If you’re trying to decide which BMW to buy, here are a few of the most important things to keep in mind!

BMW 3 Series vs 5 Series: Which One Is Right For You?

Passenger Space

This is the most important difference between the BMW 3 Series and the 5 Series. The styling can look pretty similar, but the 5 Series is much bigger inside and out. If you’re going to spend lots of time with passengers in the backseat, the 5 Series will provide the legroom they need. The 3 Series is more of a driver’s car – there’s still plenty of space up front, but the backseat will be a bit tighter.

Performance

The engine options for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 Series overlap, but they’re not identical. The 3 Series is available with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (328i) or a more powerful turbo 6-cylinder (335i). The 5 Series uses both of these same engines in the 528i and 535i. However, the 5 Series also offers a V-8 engine in top-of-the-line models. If you’re looking for the most speed and power, the 550i is your best bet.

But the difference isn’t just about raw engine power. Since the 3 Series is a much lighter car than the 5 Series, it provides a different feel. Some drivers like the lighter and more agile BMW, while some like the 5 Series’ heft. If you’re not sure where you stand, you’re welcome to test drive them both!

Interior and Features

As we said, the BMW 3 Series and the 5 Series share lots of the same features and tech. Just because the 3 Series is smaller doesn’t mean it’s lacking in luxury. They’re both available with all-wheel drive. However, the BMW 5 Series does tend to offer a few extras. The details will be different from year to year, so feel free to ask us about any specific model!
